PEACEHAVEN & TELSCOMBE BOWLING TOUR

BOURNEMOUTH 10-17th SEPTEMBER 2011.

Muster at the bowls club at 10.45 am was a start for the 44 members & friends who made it to actually get on the coach, which left minus Valerie Mant who was sorely missed. A pleasant journey was recorded with Pat Giles winning the mileage AND the raffle.

SUNDAY 11th SEPTEMBER.

Sunday saw the sun shine & a pleasant 2 hours were spent in Lyndhurst before eventually finding the entrance to BROCKENHURST B.C.  The afternoon was spent being taught a lesson in bowls or for some recovering from the night before. A testing green, especially the 2 end rinks but, "H" Joslin & his rink mastered it well to win by  25-12 & Ted Giles, the only other rink to win, by  20-14. Overall we lost by 95 - 148 to a fine bowling team whose secretary was away winning his 22nd New Forest League title. But in spite of this we were fed & watered with an excellent tea & Reg Thompson managed to win a bottle of whisky in the raffle. Returning home to the hotel for dinner & to the victors the spoils & the losers Angel's HALOs & DEVIL'S Horns, the captain awarding these for 2nd & 2nd bottom rinks.

MONDAY 12th  SEPTEMBER

Today saw captain Ted Giles lead his side to a 113 - 108 victory over the BRANKSOME PARK BC in a most picturesque setting in the trees, where hospitality abounded. It was recorded that Tas Alder was spotted earlier in Poole town centre wearing his horns for which he was rewarded. Within the game much consternation was caused with HONEY BEAR being moved virtually every end to the highest LOSING RINK. The captain, trying to manipulate the HALOs, finished up by the biter being bitten, finishing with the HALO'S  for a further 24 hours by finishing 4th on count back.

TUESDAY 13th SEPTEMBER

A pleasant morning was spent by most sitting on the quayside at LYMINGTON before moving on to the bowling green under our Lady Captain Audrey Kirby, who  had to keep the sun shining while playing one of the strongest sides of the week. With her wily guiles Audrey had tea time while the heavens opened for a thorough downpour. Then as she re-appeared the sun came out again. This was a close fought contest on a slick green which was enjoyed by all until the spoils were presented. The game was lost by 86 - 129 with Don Evans playing for the opposition & getting 4 touchers. The biggest cheer of the week was for the award of the HALO'S to Vence Thomas's rink which included the captain & tour organiser Mike Gould, especially as he had to wear it the following day on his visit to friends.

WEDNESDAY 14th SEPTEMBER

We awoke to driving rain & all seemed doom & gloom for our first-time Captain Robin Selley, but not a man to be downhearted he talked all into getting on the coach for a good afternoons bowling on a splendid green at WESTMOORS B.C. "Bonhomie" abounded & after looking happy at tea time winning on 3 rinks & drawing on 1, a great contest was eventually lost by only 8 shots, by 111-119. The captain held his head high having not forgotten anything & having done a splendid job by making sure he avoided the nasties.

THURSDAY 15th SEPTEMBER

Our Secretary & his wife returned to where Margaret's father was once Club Champion, so Frank Leach led his troops into battle into a sunny, charming, chocolate box setting at the BROADSTONE WESSEX B.C. At tea time all looked on a knife edge with the visitors leading by a slender 5. So our captain, rallying his troops with a joke from his vice captain Ted Giles, gained the week's biggest success with a fine 146-109 win. But in the evening he caused havoc with a master plan on touchers for the HALOs & DEVILS. So the top rink finished with medals & DEVILS. But by far one of the best scenes was seeing Jean Newton return to the green after her accident.

FRIDAY

A pleasant morning was spent in Christchurch before our coach driver took a wrong turning on the way to our hosts HIGHCLIFFE
B.C
. in a quiet nature reserve where the whole team with their President welcomed us. The game was played in bright sunshine with much camaraderie & laughter. On a tricky green a resounding victory was achieved. Players were presented with a memento of their game at tea time along with donuts to slow them down. Victory by 127-95 was sweet for captain Mike Gould as he played against friends. The nasties were selected by spectator John Kirby with a warped sense of humour. He that came first shall be last & vice versa. HALO'S were given to the rink with the 3rd most touchers & the devils were presented to the noisiest rink.                                                                                                                                                        Touchers
